Goodtype launched the United by the Arts campaign in April 2020 to connect the type and lettering community amidst widespread shutdowns around the globe. I reached out to my Milan-based Instagram friend, Reiko Hirata, to collaborate on this pen pal-themed piece. We visualized our concept with a pencil, postage, and paper airplane, and we also incorporated Japanese and English translations of the phrase to nod to our mutual heritage.

—Our collaboration process included a series of back-and-forth sketching, mutually selecting a conceptual direction, and self-refinement of type styles, color, and rendering.
